CHAPTER SEVEN

DANIEL WATCHED ANNABELLE as she stared out the window of the chopper, barely noting the rugged landscape that he rarely got to see from this view. His thoughts were focused on two things—the survival of their patient and her.

When he’d first seen her walk into the hotel lobby earlier, his heart had kicked in his chest at the navy-blue dress she wore. It emphasized her curves despite it being businesslike and demure, and made her hair seem an even lighter blond, like corn silk in the sunlight. The outfit proved that, sexy as the woman looked in scrubs, she looked even better in clothes that showed off her gorgeous legs. Then he’d had to suffer looking at those legs and wanting to reach over to touch her soft skin the entire car ride to Lima. He wanted to keep looking at them even now.

“I’ve never flown in a helicopter before,” Annabelle said, shoving her hair behind her ears in a nervous gesture. “It’s kind of scary, don’t you think?”

“Are you feeling scared?” He let himself reach for her hand, wishing he’d noticed instead of being so focused on her body and his own feelings of lust he needed to control. “Just look at me, then, and not out the window. We’ll be there soon.”

“I know it’s silly. I mean, flying’s flying, right? It doesn’t bother me to travel in a plane, you know?”

“We’re sitting in a loud, glass bubble where you can see in three directions. It’s getting darker, and I don’t know about you but the mix of sun and cloud shadows on the trees and mountains and rivers looks a little eerie, don’t you think? Makes one ponder what it would be like to crash-land into all that wilderness.”

He said it in a teasing voice, and the hand he wasn’t holding smacked his arm.

“What a way to reassure a girl. Thanks ever so much.”

“You’re welcome.” He leaned over to look out her side of the chopper, breathing in her scent and wishing he could kiss her fears away. “If you try to think about how beautiful it is, though, how awesome the landscape is and how you might not ever see it this way again, it’ll help you feel calm and even enjoy it some.”

“I’ll try.”

“Or do some of your yoga that helps you get mentally centered.”

“Yoga in a helicopter? Might be a little problematic.”

That his joke brought a smile to her face warmed his chest and made him smile, too. Her gaze met his for a long moment as she squeezed his hand, and it surprised and pleased him that she didn’t pull away. Probably because she needed the reassurance of someone’s touch, nothing more.

After a few more minutes the pilot told them they were heading down and brought the helicopter to a near stop in the sky before slowly descending to a fairly flat open space not too far from the clinic.

“Unbelievable that he can do that!” Annabelle said, her eyes becoming round. “Just hover in midair.
